When you start out as a newbie blogger, it can be hard to figure out what you are passionate about. Every experienced blogger has their niche nailed down and it can be hard when you are just starting out to know what your niche is from the get-go. The one good thing about blogging is that there are no rules! You don’t have to narrow down in the beginning if you don’t want to. The more you write, the more you will find out what you are truly passionate about.
I get it, there are so many topics that you want to write about. We have all been there! Think about what you are really passionate about. What can you talk about for hours? You want to make sure that what you are writing about is something that gets you excited. This will only help you in the long run because it will help you stay consistent. Blogging consistently will help your blog gain some traction and become successful over time. It’s absolutely okay to decide on a niche instead of trying to appeal to a large crowd. When you find your niche and your tribe, you will be able to cater your content specifically to them!
Choosing a niche may seem scary. Not everyone is going to love your blog and that is okay. You don’t have to write for everyone if you don’t want to. You can absolutely write for your tribe and for the content that you are passionate about. You may not get as much traffic as you want in the beginning but eventually, you will grow your audience to people who absolutely love the content that you are putting out. Deciding on a specific niche will help you set you apart from the crowd. Not only will it help you in narrowing down your specific reader but will also help you when it comes to creating specific content.
Once you find your niche, think about the different topics inside of that. Write out a list of categories that you can write about that would interest your readers. Some topics may be related and some may not be. Writing out each topic will help you come up with ideas for each category. For example, if you wanted to write about blogging you could have categories about designing a blog, how to start a blog, etc.
Just because you find your niche doesn’t mean that you have to be restrictive. If you have a super small niche, you may run out of ideas to blog about. If there are a few topics that you absolutely love to write about, find a way to link them together! If you love to write about travel but you also love to write about food you love, you could absolutely link those two categories up and you may not even realize it. You could write about different restaurants you visit and eat at while you are traveling. Linking up different categories will allow you to broaden the things you write about and allow you to write about more than one passion. You may have to get a little creative. If you are already creating content that you know your readers will love, chances are they will love similar content too.
The more you write, the better you will understand your readers. From looking at your analytics, you will get a good idea on what posts do better than others. You may think that your audience will love one specific topic and they may surprise you! You can always adjust your content as you go. The best part about running your own blog is that there are no rules. You are allowed to change your content as you grow and get to know your readers better. If you pick one niche but fall in love with another down the road, that’s okay. You want to make sure that your blog is something that you love creating content for. If you have to force yourself to write about things you don’t love, chances are you will put off writing.
The important part of blogging is to not get overwhelmed. Running your blog should be fun, not stressful! The more you write, the more you will discover what you love to talk about and that may change over time. It’s absolutely okay to change and pivot.
