Finding your blog name is probably one of the hardest choices you will make when it comes to your blog! There are so many options out there and it always seems like when you think of a good one, it’s taken! Your domain name is going to be so important because it’s the home of your blog. It’s what most people are going to see right off the bat so you want to make sure it’s something you know you are going to love and that is memorable for people to come back to. Here are a few simple tips that I recommend when it comes to finding your perfect domain name.
1) Keywords
Think about what you are blogging about on the regular. Are you sticking to certain topics or are you talking about a few different things? Think about different keywords that come to mind when it comes to your content. Also, think about your brand’s values. When it comes to your name, you want something that flows with your content. Mix and match some of the keywords together to see what works together and what doesn’t. You may even start brainstorming a few other words from the keywords you originally thought of. The more words you come up with, the more you will be able to see what you like and what you don’t like. Don’t push it too hard to find the right name on your first try. Just let the words flow naturally. You may end up with something that totally surprises you!
Not sure how to brainstorm new keywords? Use the Thesaurus!
2) Get Creative
When it comes to your blog name, you want something unique. Think of something that is unique to you and your content! Not only will it separate you from the other bloggers in your niche but you’ll also have an easier time finding a domain name to go along with it. Having a unique name will make your brand stand out from others and make your brand truly yours. Don’t be scared to go with something off the beaten path a little. Your name is what you make of it!
3) Short and Memorable
Keeping your name short and memorable will make sure that your readers will remember it! You don’t want to make your blog name too complicated because it may confuse readers and make it hard to find when searching. Make sure that you keep the spelling simple as well. If you choose to spell a word wrong on purpose, it may make it very hard for readers to find when they are searching. Keeping it simple and easy to find will make it easier for you in the long run.
4) Buying the Domain
When you finally pick your blog name, it’s time to buy your domain name! There are so many different places to purchase your domain name. Do your research to see what places are going to offer you the best offer for your needs. One of my favorite places to buy domain names is Namecheap! They have really great prices for their domains and you get privacy protection fo’ free! (Trust me, unless you like spam calls/mail, you’ll want the privacy protection!)
5) Getting a Dot Com
I always recommend getting the dot com version of your domain. The other options may be a bit cheaper but dot coms are more popular and what your readers are going to remember. I know the cheaper price may sound really appealing but at the end of the day, you want to make sure that you are making it easy for your readers to come back to your website again and again. If the .com version is not available to you, I would recommend getting either the .co or the .net. They are a good runner-up to the .com version! These are just the most popular options and will benefit you and your blog the most.
Don’t let picking the perfect blog and domain name stress you out! If it doesn’t come to you right away, keep plugging along with those ideas. Eventually, you will find the perfect name that fits you and your brand. When you find the perfect name, you will know it right away!
