How to Set Up the Genesis Framework

Most Genesis Framework settings should come out of the box the same as the theme, but in case of a glitch, here is what you want to look for.

All the Genesis options can be found under “Theme Settings” in the Customizer.

Under “Updates”, I recommend you make sure that “Check for Updates” is checked. This will assure that your Genesis theme is always up to date. The Kara theme won’t be updated automatically, but most Genesis updates are safe for it. Make sure you always have a backup before updating the Genesis Framework.

Under “Site Layout”, you can decide if you want a sidebar site-wide, and which side it will be on. If you want to have the 3-column layout that comes with the Kara theme, I recommend switching to “Full-Width” here.

Under “Breadcrumbs”, we let you do what you want! We’re not a big fan of the look of breadcrumbs, but they are good for SEO purposes. Activate them if you want them!

Under “Comments and Trackbacks”, we’ve only activated the “Comments on Posts”. Obviously, you’re welcome to activate any other. If the “Comments on Posts” is checked but the comment box isn’t actually showing up, try unchecking the box, saving the settings, checking it again, and saving another time. Sometimes the settings on installation are glitchy, and this is a way to reset it.

Under “Singular Content”, you can decide if you want to show featured images on single posts and pages. You can also customize your metadata. This is what we use for the “Entry Meta (Above Content)”

[post_date format="F d, Y"] | [post_author_posts_link] <br/> [post_categories before="" sep=" + "]

We’ve left the “Entry Meta (Below Content)” empty, but feel free to add content to it!

We recommend you read the documentation on post shortcodes before modifying this content.

Under “Content Archives”, this is where you will change the rest of the settings for the blog feed layout. We recommend setting “Entry Excerpts” and setting the character limit to 0. Also, make sure the “Featured Image” box is checked. For the size, we recommend selecting either “Carousel-Vertical”, “Carousel-Horizontal” or “Carousel-Square” based on what you picked in the carousel and for your layout. For the image alignment, we usually select “Center”. For the pagination type, we select “Numeric”.

Under “Footer”, this is where you can add your copyright information and add extra links if you want to. Since this is only an HTML box, you will have to write links manually.

Under “Header/Footer Scripts”, add all the scripts you need to keep track of your website! It’s the perfect place to add code for Google Analytics or a Facebook Pixel. Just make sure that any tracking software you use is disclosed in your privacy policy.
